I am having trouble putting together the scenario of how this must have gone down. My first thought was that someone put the possum up there as a joke. We're hillbillies, and we think weird stuff is funny.
However, it looks like the top of mailbox might have been creased by a bullet, and the possum does look as if he were Dead Right There.
If the damage to mailbox and the possum are related, that would indicate it had climbed up there on its own -- for no discernible reason outside of possum logic -- it seemed like a good idea at the time.
